2 Oaks Writing

2 Oaks Writing was founded by Claire Hilton in 2020. Its inception was the result of spinning many plates: copywriting for her husband’s company, Hilton Barnfield Architects; helping out friends with their Exeter Living Award applications; running creative writing courses and teaching English to GCSE and A-level students in a secondary school while bringing up two boys.

Claire loves books.  Not just the physical kind, she has also recently made the leap into the kindlesphere.  Her favourite novels are Frenchman’s Creek by Daphne Du Maurier and The Shadow of the Wind by Carols Ruiz Zafon.  She has a first class honours in English Literature from Cardiff University where she wrote well-regarded essays about the presentation of female sexuality in Dracula and the evolution of the legend of Robin Hood.  She also has an MA in Teaching Creative Writing and a PGCE in Secondary English.

Her years of experience teaching in Devon schools makes her well practiced in encouraging writers and providing a supportive space.  She has marked thousands of essays and smiled her way through 12 years of half drowning in lesson plans, reports and class books.

Claire writes stories and poems, and has also been writing a novel for some time – two children do tend to get in the way of ones creative projects! In 2016 she was shortlisted in a novel competition.  As yet it  remains a work in progress while she supports others on their creative journeys and business ventures.

As well as reading and writing, Claire also teaches yoga in her local community and enjoys the cosy feeling of knowing she’s made a few yogis and a few writers feel great about themselves at the end of a session.
